P.S.  Don’t let your stuffed animals distract you!

5TH GRADERS MOVING TO BRMS..
Our school committee will be voting on an important issue in the next few weeks that will affect the children of our community.  There is a proposal to move all of the district’s fifth graders to Broad Rock Middle School for the upcoming school year.  Please let your voice be heard and contact a school committee member to express your thoughts on this matter.

        April 13, 14, 15
        April 27, 28, 29

Psst, tell your friends, pass the word.
CARES THANKS YOU…
We would like to give a BIG thank you to all the children and families who donated to the CARES Spelling BEE fundraiser.  We would not have had a team without the sponsorship and support of our PTO and Principal Nettik.  The WKES team of Ann Marie Glanville and myself did go on to the 3rd round only to spell “anablepid” incorrectly.  Thank you to ALL for sustaining the programs CARES offers in supporting the children of our district!  For more information about what CARES provides… please visit our website www.skcares.org.  Thank you.  Amy Nadeau

READING WEEK IS COMING…
Start collecting your gently used books for our Book Swap in April.

MUSIC NEWS…
Students who ordered band books are reminded to bring in $10.65 (cash or checks payable to Wakefield Music.)  Performance Festival registration forms and fees need to be turned in by Friday, March 5th.

MONDAY’S COMMON PLANNING TIME ASSEMBLY…
On Monday, March 8th, the URI Learning Landscape Program will present “Green Jobs, Recycling, and Red Worms”.  What can you do to help protect your environment?

STUDENT COUNCIL COMMUNITY SERVICE…
Peanut Butter Anyone???
The West Kingston School Student Council is collecting peanut butter for the RI Community Food Bank.  One in six RI children will go to bed hungry tonight.  During March and April the WK Student Council will be assisting Washington Trust to collect this high protein food, loved by children and adults.
Since 2001, 77 tons of peanut butter have been collected.  This year they hoped to collect 23 more tons to make 100 tons collected.
To help out with this ambitious goal, please send jars of peanut butter to the school office.  There will be a box there for each grade level.  We’ll let you know how we are doing the end of March.

PTO NEWS…
THE NEXT PTO MEETING WILL BE MARCH 17TH AT 7:00 PM

Ladies Choice Dance: “An Evening Under The Stars”
The night was a huge success.  There were almost 92 families in attendance. They had a wonderful time dancing the night away with friends and their invited adult.  Thanks to all who donated baked goods for the kids to snack on.  We would also like to thank Tony Santucci for making the beautiful t-shirts and our photographer, Images by Christine, and Music Mixers DJ for helping make the night special for our girls.  A very special thank you to our chairperson, Melissa Cromack, for putting this night together and setting up the cafeteria to make it look like “an evening under the stars.”  There are a few extra t-shirts that can be purchased for $5.00.  Please contact Melissa at mcromack1@cox.net for sizes.
Square One Art
Be on the lookout for the kids’ order forms and artwork.  It will be in backpacks at the end of this week or the beginning of next.  If you are planning to order, they need to be in by March 19th.  Questions, contact Tricia Angeli at triciaangeli@cox.net. .

Yearbook Pictures
If you have been to any events and have pictures that you would like to be included in the yearbook, please send them into school in an envelope for the PTO.  Pictures will not be able to be returned.  Questions, contact Triciaangeli@cox.net.

Popcorn Friday
We will be selling popcorn again this Friday.  The cost is .50 cents per bag.  So far this has been a huge success for the classrooms.  All proceeds this time will go back to Ms. MacNeil’s third grade classroom.  Thanks for all your support.

CAPTION COLLAGE…
(Article provided courtesy of Scholastic Inc.)
Help your child develop word-recognition skills and expand her vocabulary by finding the best words to describe a picture.
What you need:
·       Magazines
·       Newspapers
·       Glue
·       Scissors
·       Paper
What to do:
1.  With your child, look through old magazines
and newspapers for photos that seem
     particularly interesting.
2.  Cut out the photos and glue each one to a
     piece of paper.
3.  Next, encourage your child to look for words
to use as captions for the pictures.  They can
be descriptive, humorous, or even just silly.
4.  Help your child cut out the words and glue
them underneath the photos.  For an added
challenge, try to find different captions for
     each photo.

JUST FOR FUN…
Teacher:  Name one important thing we have
today that we didn’t have 10 years
                 ago.
Student:   Me!
