Welcome to West Kingston Elementary School. This information sheet was developed by WKES parents, faculty and staff for new WKES parents.  Special events and activities are subject to change from year to year.

WKES MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the West Kingston Elementary School community is continue to create an outstanding educational environment that integrates continuous improvement and enhancement of our programs for the success of our students, staff and families.   Further, it is our vision to continue to create a safe, caring, supportive and respectful environment, where all students become responsible, life-long learners and contribute positively to our global society.

SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

The school newsletter comes out every Wednesday.  The newsletter provides information about upcoming events and activities.


INFORMATION DISTRIBUTION Information distributed by the school usually comes home in your child’s backpack every Wednesday.
STUDENT HANDBOOK

Sent home at the beginning of the school year.  Lists staff, school day timetable, school rules, and School District calendar.
STUDENT DIRECTORY

Produced by the PTO in the fall.  For those who wish to be included  - lists students at WKES with the addresses and phone numbers.
SCHOOL EVENTS

Back To School Picnic – In August.  Family picnic at school to meet new classmates and teachers.


Open House – In September.  View your child’s classroom and meet teacher(s).


Autumn Fest – In October.  PTO sponsored event.  Families invited to school in the evening to play games.

 

Book Fair – In October.  PTO sponsored event run in conjunction with Autumn Fest.  Scholastic books offered.


Report Out Night – In March.  For Parents.  Demonstrations to parents on activities conducted in the classroom.  Presentation on statewide testing.


Family Dance and Silent Auction – In April.  PTO’s biggest fundraising event.  Food and entertainment also provided for the family.


Multi Cultural Day – In June.  PTO sponsored event during the school day where children learn about different countries.


Café Culture and Book Fair – In June.  Children’s artwork on display.  Ice cream sundae’s provided for the family.  Spring scholastic book fair run concurrently.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Art Enrichment Program – Art classes held after school. Run by Brushstrokes.  Sign up each month to make special art projects.  Classes held once a week.


Comic Book Club – Geared toward 5th graders who like to draw.


Spanish Language Classes – Offered through out the year before and after school. Classes meet once a week.

 

Science and Investigative Learning Experience - SMILE is an after school math and science club for 4th and 5th graders from WKES and PeaceDale Elementary.

SIT
Committee made up of teachers and parents who are responsible for coordinating continuous improvement at WKES and communicate student learning and performance to the community.
PTO

The PTO is an organization made up of parents, guardians, teachers and employees at WKES.  The mission is to enrich the educational experience of the students.  Everyone is automatically a member if you have a child at WKES.  The PTO meets at the school about 5 times a year.  The PTO raises approximately $8,000 a year.  The money this year went to the classrooms, student agenda’s, special school assemblies, level book library, artwork display cases and field trips.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The WKES Student Council is made up of 4th and 5th graders. The student council was given the Honor Student Council School of Excellence Award for 2004-2005.  The student council runs Spirit Days once a month, the Pennies for Patients fundraiser, and the school recycling program.


STUDENTS AS MEDIATORS
SAM is a mediation program run by students for students.  Mediators are 5th
graders who are trained to help 3rd, 4th and 5th graders solve conflicts.


CHARACTER ED. CLUB
Club led by 5th grade leaders who present a different character trait (ie:
caring, respect) each month or so to each class.  Students are encouraged
by the leaders to work on displaying this behavior throughout the month.
Those students who are "caught" demonstrating this behavior are given an award.
SECOND STEP PROGRAM

Program in most classrooms to teach social and conflict resolution skills.

STUDENT RECOGNITION ASSEMBLIES

Once a month various students are recognized for the outstanding qualities at a school assembly.
SPECIAL GRADE EVENTS

5th Grade Mural – The 5th grade class creates a mural.  This year’s mural was created for the bike path and was paid special recognition by RI’s Fish and Wildlife Council.


5th Grade Graduation Ceremony


4th Grade Play – The 4th grade class presents a play in the spring.


4th Grade Battle of the Books – 4th graders can participate in district wide reading battle.


4th and 5th Grade Concert - 4th and 5th graders can participate in Orchestra and Chorus Concert.  5th grade Band members also have a concert.


1st Grade Musical – The first grade class presents a music program to the school and their parents.

SCHOOL PLEDGE

The school pledge is recited every morning with the pledge of allegiance and a song.

School Pledge

I pledge today to do my best in reading math, and all the rest.

I promise to obey the rules in my class and in the school.

I’ll respect myself and others, too.

I’ll expect the best in all I do.
