Our Curriculum...
Kindergarten |
At the kindergarten level, art is all about exploration. A variety of new materials are introduced to students such as watercolor paint, tempera paint, oil pastels, modeling clay and ceramic clay. Students explore the boundaries of these materials and invent new ways to manipulate them. Students are also introduced about a variety of art terms and techniques such as patterns, shapes, lines, texture and form. Creativity is key! |
1st Grade |
Students at this level have all had experience with most materials. Manipulation of the materials begins to gain control to allow students at this level to express their ideas more concisely. Techniques learned in kindergarten such as collage, patterning and blending paint are reinforced. |
2nd Grade |
Students at the second grade level are expected to have a strong grasp on manipulating art materials and can begin to convey their ideas more clearly in their art. Students can identify and create symbolic meaning in their artwork . |
3rd Grade |
Students at the third grade level are expected to know how to show texture, pattern, line variety, shape and color in a creative way on their artwork. New techniques are learned such as showing value and understanding color theory (complementary colors, primary and secondary colors, tints, shades etc.). Students can show and understand more complex concepts such as perspective and balance in their artwork. |
4th Grade |
At the fourth grade level, students are building on key concepts and techniques learned in previous years. Students can be expected to begin with an idea and formulate ways to express that intended meaning in their artwork. Students are sharpening their skills with handling art materials and begin to understand how artists use elements and principles of design to convey the main idea. |
