Fairy tales, Mysteries, and Peregrine Falcons
OH MY...
The 3rd grade reading unit for the rest of the school year is Mysteries.  Children will be using all they've learned this year to help them with this fun genre.  They will read closely to try and solve the mystery by paying attention to and keeping track of clues, suspects, red herrings and more.  They will use the special vocabulary of detectives as well.  Mysteries are a perfect genre for figuring out "motive".  The read aloud is an A-Z Mystery entitled "The Falcon's Feathers".  In the spirit of Peregrine falcons, Devin told us about a web camera that is recording Peregrine Falcons so we watched it this afternoon while doing other work.  The falcons are nesting in Providence at the "Superman" building.  Just google...falcons superman building providence RI" and it will come up.  We watched the mother fly away, saw the babies and then she came back.  So cool to be able to watch nature from the classroom too.

In writing, the final unit is writing narratives but in the form of a fairy tale.  We just started it this week and have been studying the structure of classic fairy tales and different  adaptations.  Ask your child how author's change/adapt a tale to make it their own version.  Children will be writing their own adaptation.

I will be at the ice cream social tonight for most of the time so I will see your then.  Hopefully most families will be able to make it as the 3rd grade musicians sound fabulous!
