OH MY... The 3rd grade reading unit for the rest of the school year is Mysteries.  Children will be using all they've learned this year to help them with this fun genre.  They will read closely to try and solve the mystery by paying attention to and keeping track of clues, suspects, red herrings and more.  They will use the special vocabulary of detectives as well.  Mysteries are a perfect genre for figuring out "motive".  The read aloud is an A-Z Mystery entitled "The Falcon's Feathers".  In the spirit of Peregrine falcons, Devin told us about a web camera that is recording Peregrine Falcons so we watched it this afternoon while doing other work.  The falcons are nesting in Providence at the "Superman" building.  Just google...falcons superman building providence RI" and it will come up.  We watched the mother fly away, saw the babies and then she came back.  So cool to be able to watch nature from the classroom too.   In writing, the final unit is writing narratives but in the form of a fairy tale.  We just started it this week and have been studying the structure of classic fairy tales and different  adaptations.  Ask your child how author's change/adapt a tale to make it their own version.  Children will be writing their own adaptation.   I will be at the ice cream social tonight for most of the time so I will see your then.  Hopefully most families will be able to make it as the 3rd grade musicians sound fabulous!

We are having a great day.  Ask your child about these events: -Calories & healthy snacks -Smokey Joe  (awesome visuals that would make anyone want to quit smoking or never start) -Yoga -Cough Hygiene -Track & Field These were just some of the events. I asked the children to bring in any poetry books they have, after vacation, for the class to use until the end of April.  No worries if you don't have any.  Just a reminder that PARCC testing starts the Tuesday after vacation.  We've been practicing in math and reading.  I have been referring to the test as the days we "go for a fun walk in the PARCC".  We have practiced test taking strategies too.  All the teachers keep stressing that you just do the best you can and try to stay focused.  It's nothing to worry about!! Enjoy the next week with your children.

Due to the predicted rain/sleet tomorrow, I will not be going on the hike I had written to families about last month.  Seems like winter wants to stick around!  Just a few notes about next week.  The children will probably earn a "team celebration" today so they will write in their planners next week, letting you know the  day we will have this celebration.  Also, we are having a special guest come in on Monday.  Billy's Mom is a published writer of children's books so we are very excited for her visit.

I'm back blogging!!  Technology was kind to me yesterday!  Just sending home this hard copy today so you are aware.  In the future, I'll have the children write in their planner if I've updated the blog, so you will know to look on the WKES web site.  It will only be on Fridays, 1 or 2 times a month.  Just go to WKES site, staff link, Hannafin link, Hannafin blog. Ask Your Child About... Team Building: We continue to work on being a class "team" and individual responsibilities.  Ask:  Are you close to earning a "team celebration"?   Reading & Writing How are you displaying what you learned about the animal your club researched?  Which animal did you choose for your display?  What was one strategy you learned that helped your club work together?  (Example:  Sit in a triangle, eyes on speaker, trying to "piggyback" off of a partner's idea)  I know you did a lot of writing this week about the book, "Each Kindness".  Tell me about the book.  What do you think was one of the themes of the book? Math: Have you been solving 1 step or 2 step word problems?  Do you ever use parentheses in your final answer?    How are you doing on your math goal with your multiplication facts?

I'm thrilled to let you know that I will be back blogging monthly instead of sending home paper newsletters.  I will send a quick class update tomorrow.
